What is the difference between rich media, display and native ads?
- Display ads are image or HTML5 banners in fixed sizes set by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), such as the 728×90 leaderboard, 300×250 medium rectangle and 160×600 skyscraper. They are the most widely available format and the simplest to buy.
- Rich media ads add interaction: units that expand, play video, run a carousel or respond to the viewer. They take more work to build and serve, and are designed to hold attention for longer.
- Native ads match the look and feel of the content around them, such as sponsored articles, in-feed units and recommendation placements. They read as part of the page and must be clearly labelled as sponsored.
Most campaigns combine them: display for reach and frequency, native for consideration, and rich media for the moments that deserve more attention.
Why buy ad placements directly from a publisher?
When you buy directly, you know exactly which sites and positions carry your ads, the price is agreed up front, and there is no chain of intermediaries taking a share of the spend between you and the page. Direct deals also allow things the open exchanges cannot, such as category sponsorships and fixed positions for the length of a flight.
Programmatic buying has its own strengths, chiefly scale and audience targeting across thousands of sites. We offer both, and many campaigns use each for what it does best. For a side-by-side look, read direct-sold vs programmatic, compared honestly.
What is the West Coast Media Solutions network?
It is a growing portfolio of content websites that we design, build and operate ourselves, covering travel, automotive, food and recipes, wine, fitness and wellness, finance and market data, entertainment, photography and reference. Each site has its own focused content, a clean layout and fixed ad positions, including leaderboards, sidebar units, in-content placements, sticky footers and native in-feed positions.
Because we own the sites, we control the environment your ads appear in and can build formats and packages around your campaign. The current list of properties and their audience figures is on our network page.
How do you keep ads brand-safe?
On our own network, we decide what content is published and keep editorial standards consistent across the sites, so you know what kind of content your ad will appear beside before it runs.
On programmatic campaigns, we use site inclusion and exclusion lists, content category exclusions and frequency caps, and we review placement reports during the flight to remove anything that does not belong.
What ad sizes and formats are available?
Placements vary by site. Across the network they include:
- Leaderboards (728×90) and large leaderboards (970×90)
- Medium rectangles (300×250) and skyscrapers (160×600)
- Mobile banner sizes for phone visitors
- Sticky footer and adhesion units
- In-content placements between paragraphs
- Native in-feed units and sponsored articles
- Category sponsorships and custom packages across several sites
Specifications and lead times are confirmed when you book.
