Website Case Study

Exotic Car Collector

An editorial site for collectors of rare automobiles, laid out like a seasonal print edition, with stories that open full-screen.

At a Glance

Exotic Car Collector is written for collectors of rare and extraordinary automobiles. We designed it as an editorial publication presented as a seasonal edition, with featured stories, a journal, expert articles and a photo gallery. Articles open in full-screen overlays on the homepage, and the gallery fills itself from the image library, generating and caching its own thumbnails.

The Brief

Serious collectors read the way they buy: slowly, and with an eye for provenance. The site needed the authority of a print journal and the convenience of the web, without sending readers from page to page.

  • Present the site as a seasonal edition, with a cover story and featured pieces, the way a print magazine would.
  • Cover the collector's world in full: market analysis, auction results, restorations, barn finds and ownership.
  • Let long reads open full-screen without ever leaving the homepage.
  • Keep the gallery current without anyone editing code each time new photographs arrive.

What We Designed

The Art of Collecting Automotive Legends sits beneath a Spring 2026 edition line, with two ways in: the features or the gallery. A running line of headlines follows, then a cover story, featured pieces tagged by theme such as investment and heritage, and a journal, all with bylines and reading times, before the page closes with the newsletter and contact.

Playfair Display carries the headlines with the gravity of a collector's journal, Source Serif 4 keeps long articles comfortable to read, and Anybody adds a contemporary counterpoint. The near-black background, cool silver-grey text and antique gold buttons suit a subject where paintwork and provenance matter, and give the pages the quiet of a private viewing.

Full-screen stories

Features and journal pieces open over the homepage in full-screen overlays, so a long read never means a new page load.

Self-filling gallery

New photographs appear as soon as they reach the image library, with thumbnails made and cached for quick browsing.

Headline ticker

A running line of collector headlines, from auction sales to new model reveals, keeps the latest news in view.

Collector resources

The footer points to a price index, an events calendar, a collector directory and an insurance guide.

How We Achieved It

Articles open in full-screen overlays on the homepage rather than on separate pages, so a reader can move from the cover story to the journal and back without losing their place. The legal material works the same way: privacy, terms, cookie policy, legal terms, accessibility and a sitemap each open as an overlay from the footer.

The gallery takes care of itself. It populates from the image library, so adding a photograph is enough to publish it, and its thumbnails are generated and cached automatically so the grid stays quick to browse. Spam protection from Google reCAPTCHA covers both the newsletter signup and the contact form, and the copyright year keeps itself current.
