Southern Great Barrier Reef · Queensland

Step off the sand,
and onto the reef

On a coral cay barely a kilometre across, the Great Barrier Reef begins where the beach ends. No traffic, no crowds, no distance to travel. Only turquoise water, nesting turtles, and a thousand fish a few steps from your room.

A coral cay on the Reef

One small island, two reefs, endless water

Heron Island sits on the Tropic of Capricorn, roughly eighty kilometres off Gladstone, ringed by Heron Reef on one shore and Wistari Reef on the other. You can walk the whole island in twenty minutes, yet snorkel a different patch of coral every day for a week. It is a place to unplug, slow down, and let the tide set the pace.

What to do here

The reef is the
whole resort

Underwater adventure, quiet hours with nature, or nothing at all on the sand. Every experience starts at the water's edge.

Above and below the surface

Walk in at the shoreline. Keep going, and the reef drops away.

Heron is one of very few places where you can snorkel straight off the beach onto living coral. Here is what waits beneath you, depth by depth, the way a diver reads the gauge on the way down.

The journey
is the unwind

Heron Island has no airport runway and no cars, and that is the point. You arrive across the water, and the mainland falls away behind you.

By sea

The Heron Islander catamaran departs Gladstone Marina, around two hours across the channel. Watch for turtles and seabirds on the crossing.

From Gladstone Marina

By air

For the quickest route, a scenic seaplane or helicopter transfer from Gladstone brings the cay into view from above, reef and all.
