Your website is a set of files on a specific computer in a specific building. That building provides things a computer in an office cannot: redundant power, industrial cooling, multiple network connections, and physical security. What you are paying for with hosting is largely that building rather than the computer.

The machine

A server is a computer built to run continuously. Similar components to a desktop, arranged differently: designed to sit in a rack, to be worked on without being switched off, and to run for years without a monitor attached.

Your website is a folder of files on it, and your database if you have one. When someone requests a page, that machine reads the files and sends them back. Nothing more mysterious than that is happening.

What makes it different from a computer in your office is not the machine. It is everything around it.

The building

A data centre exists to keep computers running when the things that normally stop them happen.

Power that does not stop

Utility power, backed by batteries that carry the load for the seconds before generators start, backed by generators with fuel contracts. A power cut in the area does not reach the servers.

This is the single largest difference from a machine in an office, where a brief outage takes everything down.

Cooling that does not stop

Servers produce a great deal of heat and fail quickly without cooling. Data centres run industrial cooling with redundancy, because a cooling failure takes a room offline almost as fast as a power failure.

More than one network connection

Multiple providers entering the building by different physical routes, so a cut cable somewhere does not disconnect everything. This is why a data centre connection is more reliable than a business line rather than simply faster.

Physical security

Controlled access, monitoring, and logging of who entered. Relevant because a server someone can walk up to is a server someone can take a copy of.

What the cloud actually means

The same buildings, with the machine abstracted.

Rather than your site sitting on one identified server, it runs on a pool of hardware that can move it between machines and add capacity as needed. The building is still a building, the power and cooling are still physical, and the marketing language obscures that more than it explains it.

The practical difference is flexibility rather than location: capacity can change quickly, and a hardware failure can be absorbed by moving the workload rather than by repairing the machine. It is not a different category of thing.

Distance, and what it costs

Data travels quickly and not instantly. Every request between a visitor and the server makes a round trip, and physical distance adds time to each one.

Across a city, negligible. Across a continent, noticeable. Across an ocean, meaningful, particularly on a page making many separate requests, since the delay is paid per request rather than once.

For a business serving one region, hosting reasonably near that region is sensible and the effect is smaller than the effect of an oversized image. Distance is worth considering after the obvious things are right rather than before.

What redundancy does and does not cover

Worth being clear about, because the word appears in a great deal of hosting marketing.

Redundant power, cooling, and network protect against the building's infrastructure failing. They do not protect against a failed disk in your particular machine, a mistake in your site's code, a compromise, or an account suspension.

Those are different problems requiring different protections, principally backups held somewhere other than that server. A very well-built data centre does not make a backup unnecessary, and conflating the two is a common misunderstanding.

Finding out where yours is

Ask your host, which is a reasonable question with a specific answer: the city and the facility, or at least the region.

Some providers are straightforward about this and some are vague, which is itself informative. It matters if you have contractual obligations about where data sits, if your customers are concentrated in one region, or if you simply want to know what you are buying.
