People do scroll when there is a reason to, so the first screen's job is not to contain everything. It has to make the page worth continuing, and carry the one or two things somebody might need without going further.

The two claims that are both wrong

What the first screen actually has to do

Three things, and none of them is containing the whole page.

Confirm they are in the right place. What you do and where, in words a visitor recognises. Somebody who cannot confirm this in a second leaves regardless of what is below.

Carry the immediate action. For a trades business that is a tappable phone number. For a booking business it is the booking route.

Give a reason to continue. Visible content beginning, rather than a full-screen image that looks like the entire page.

That third point is the one that gets missed. A hero image occupying the whole screen reads as a complete page, and some visitors leave believing there was nothing else.

The full-screen hero problem

Worth naming specifically because it is a common pattern that actively suppresses scrolling.

When the first screen is exactly one image with a heading centred on it, there is no visual signal that anything follows. On a phone, where the screen is short and the image fills it, this is worse.

The fix is simple: let the next section begin visibly. A few centimetres of the following content, a heading half-visible at the bottom, or simply an image that occupies rather less than the full height.

That partial visibility is what tells somebody there is more, and it costs nothing.

Where the fold actually is

There is no single position, which is why designing to a fixed one fails.

The visible area differs by device, by browser, by whether the address bar is showing, and by whether the visitor has a large or small phone. A layout tuned so something important sits just above the fold on one device has it just below on another.

The workable approach is not to place anything at a precise boundary. Put the essential things clearly high, let everything else flow, and accept that the cut-off moves.

Reading your own scroll data

Analytics can record how far down pages people reach, and it is worth knowing.

The pattern on most small business sites is a steep drop after the first screen, then a long tail of people who read to the end. Those are two different audiences: the quick decider and the researcher.

What the data tells you is where the drop happens, and a drop at a specific point usually means something there stopped people. A large image, an unexpected section, or a block of text with no heading are common causes.

Small sites should read this carefully rather than precisely, since the numbers are frequently too small to distinguish a pattern from noise.

Ordering the page

The practical consequence, and it is a content decision rather than a design one.

Order sections by how many people need them rather than by how the business thinks about itself. Most sites lead with who they are and follow with what they do, which is the reverse of what a visitor wants.

A useful ordering for a service page: what this is, what it costs or what affects it, what the process is, evidence, and then the background. The about material belongs low, because the people who want it are the minority who scrolled.

Long pages are fine

Worth saying, because the fear of length produces worse pages than length does.

A long page with clear headings is easy to skim, and skimming is what visitors do. Splitting the same content across five short pages makes somebody click four times instead of scrolling, which is more work rather than less.

What makes a long page fail is not its length but the absence of structure: no headings, no visual breaks, and no way to tell what is coming.

The check

Open your homepage and each main service page on a phone, and photograph the first screen without scrolling.

Look at those images and ask whether a stranger could tell what you do, where you work, and how to contact you. Then ask whether it is obvious that more follows.

Most small business sites fail the second question more often than the first, and the fix is usually moving one element rather than redesigning anything, which is the same first-impression logic as in making a site feel faster than it is.
